Sweden and Ukraine exchange experiences in combating human trafficking

Cooperation with partners in Ukraine plays an important role in the fight against human trafficking. A Ukrainian delegation is currently visiting Sweden to share experiences and discuss ongoing efforts in both countries.

“We take our responsibility to coordinate Sweden’s work against human trafficking very seriously. Meeting people who are actively preventing and combating human trafficking in Ukraine enables Sweden to learn important lessons – not least about working in crisis situations such as during war,” says Lise Tamm, Director-General of the Swedish Gender Equality Agency.

On Friday, 12 September, the Swedish Gender Equality Agency hosted a meeting between the Ukrainian delegation and Swedish organisations, including the Swedish Police Authority and the Swedish Migration Agency. The discussions covered support for victims, investigative work, legal processes, cooperation, and examples of effective practical measures.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Swedish authorities have taken action in several areas and intensified cooperation, as there was a significant risk that traffickers would exploit people arriving in Sweden. The collaboration continues to monitor emerging risks related to prostitution and human trafficking.

“Every crisis and every geopolitical shift presents new challenges for efforts to combat human trafficking. Our countries must continually adapt our methods in order to remain effective,” says Lise Tamm.
