Young people risk meeting their offenders online
To a larger extent than before, children risk being exploited in prostitution and trafficking when offenders find them on digital platforms. This is one of the key findings in our report Prostitution and Trafficking in Human Beings.
Social media platforms play a big role in children's and young people's lives. This trend has created new ways for offenders to reach out to potential victims. Offenders contact children and young people to exploit them sexually through websites, dating sites, social media, and gaming apps.
The report Prostitution and Trafficking in Human Beings shows that there is a lack of knowledge and effective methods within the social service and health sectors to identify people being exploited in prostitution and trafficking. Therefore children and young people exploited in prostitution and human trafficking are not offered relevant support and treatment.
Also, access to specialised support is unevenly spread over Sweden as the specialised support exists in the larger cities.
